Last verified: April 2026 against digid.nl and netherlandsworldwide.nl
Yes, the DigiD process is genuinely annoying – here’s exactly how to get through it without losing a week. This guide walks you through every step: applying online, getting the activation letter, setting up the app, completing the ID check, and fixing the problems that trip people up. I’ve been through it myself and helped thousands of expats navigate it over 15 years.
This guide reflects Dutch registration rules as of April 2026, verified against digid.nl. Rules change – sometimes mid-year. For decisions involving your legal status, consult an immigration lawyer (immigratieadvocaat) in the Netherlands.
If you want every step of your Netherlands move covered in one place, the DutchPat Complete Package walks you through BSN, DigiD, healthcare, tax, and 15 more topics with checklists and video tutorials.
What Is DigiD and Why You Need It
DigiD (Digital Identity) is your personal login for Dutch government services. Think of it as a single key that opens every government door online – tax filing, healthcare allowance applications, municipality services, and more.
Every person registered in the Netherlands can get a DigiD. It’s tied to your BSN number, which means you need your BSN before you can apply. No BSN, no DigiD – so if you haven’t registered at your municipality yet, do that first. See our guide on how to get your BSN to get started.
Here’s what you need DigiD for:
- Tax filing. The Belastingdienst (Dutch tax authority) requires DigiD to file your income tax return, apply for the 30% ruling, or check your tax status online.
- Zorgtoeslag (healthcare allowance). Once you have DigiD, you can apply for zorgtoeslag through the Toeslagen portal – most single expats earning under EUR 40,857 qualify.
- Huurtoeslag (rent allowance). Same portal, same DigiD login. Check your eligibility with our huurtoeslag calculator.
- Municipality services. Requesting proof of registration, reporting a move, ordering certificates – all through your gemeente’s online portal using DigiD.
- Healthcare. Checking your insurance status, accessing your medical records through MijnOverheid, and managing referrals.
DigiD is completely free. There’s no fee to apply, no subscription, and no charges for using it. If anyone asks you to pay for DigiD, that’s a scam.
As part of your arrival checklist, DigiD should be your second priority after getting your BSN – start the application the same day you register at your municipality, because the activation letter takes a few days to arrive by post.
How to Apply for DigiD (Step by Step)
The application itself takes about 5 minutes. The waiting is what takes longer.
Step 1: Go to the DigiD Website
Open digid.nl/aanvragen – this is the official application page in Dutch. Make sure you’re on digid.nl (the official site), not a lookalike.
Step 2: Enter Your Details
You’ll need:
- Your BSN (burgerservicenummer)
- Your postal code and house number (as registered at your municipality)
Enter these exactly as they appear in your municipality registration. Even a small mismatch – like a different apartment number format – can cause the application to fail.
Step 3: Choose Your Username and Password
Pick a username you’ll remember. The password must meet standard security requirements (letters, numbers, minimum length). Write these down somewhere safe – you’ll need them every time you log in.
Step 4: Wait for the Activation Letter
After submitting, DigiD sends an activation letter to your registered Dutch address by post. This letter arrives within 3-5 business days.
Important details about the activation code:
- The code always starts with the letter “A” – if yours doesn’t, something went wrong
- You must activate your account within 21 days of the letter being sent
- If the code expires, you’ll need to request a new one (which means another 3-5 day wait)
Step 5: Activate Your Account
Once the letter arrives:
- Go to digid.nl/activeren
- Enter your activation code (starts with “A”)
- Log in with the username and password you chose in Step 3
That’s it. Your basic DigiD is active and you can start using it for government services.

Setting Up the DigiD App
The browser login works, but the DigiD app is faster and more secure. Most government services now prefer or require the app for higher-security logins.
Why Use the App?
- Faster login. Scan a QR code or enter a PIN instead of typing your username and password every time.
- More secure. The app uses your phone as a second authentication factor automatically.
- Required for some services. Certain government portals require the app for verified identity access (after completing the ID check – see below).
How to Set It Up
- Download the DigiD app from the Apple App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android).
- Open the app and choose “Activate.” The app will ask for your DigiD username and password.
- Set your app PIN. This is a separate PIN from your DigiD password – you’ll use this to unlock the app quickly.
- Confirm via SMS or email. DigiD sends a confirmation code to verify it’s really you linking the app to your account.
Once connected, you can log in to government services by scanning the QR code shown on your computer screen with the app, or by entering your PIN directly on your phone.
Supported devices: The DigiD app works on iPhones running iOS 15 or later and Android phones running Android 9.0 or later. If your phone is older than this, you’ll need to use the browser login with SMS controle instead.
Completing the ID Check (NFC Scan)
The ID check raises your DigiD to a higher security level. Some government services require it – for example, accessing certain health records or applying for specific permits.
What the ID Check Does
It’s a one-time NFC (near-field communication) scan of your identity document using your smartphone. DigiD reads the chip in your document to verify your identity at a higher level. After the check is complete, your DigiD account is marked as “verified” and you gain access to services that require this level.
What DigiD does NOT do: No personal data from your document is stored on your phone or in the app. DigiD only records that the check was completed successfully. Your passport data stays on your passport.
How to Complete It
- Open the DigiD app and go to “ID check” (or “Identiteitscontrole”).
- Hold your identity document against the back of your phone. The NFC reader in your phone scans the chip in your document. Keep the document still until the scan completes – it takes a few seconds.
- Follow the on-screen prompts. The app confirms the scan was successful.
Which Documents Work?
- Dutch passport
- Dutch identity card (ID-kaart)
- Dutch driving licence
Foreign passports are not currently supported for the DigiD ID check.
Phone Requirements
Your phone needs NFC capability:
- iPhone: iPhone 7 or newer
- Android: Android 9.0 or newer with NFC hardware
Not sure if your phone has NFC? Check your phone’s settings – search for “NFC” and make sure it’s turned on.
No NFC? If your phone doesn’t support NFC, you can still use DigiD for most services. The ID check is only required for a handful of higher-security services. Your basic DigiD + SMS controle (see below) covers the vast majority of what you’ll need.

SMS Controle (Two-Factor Authentication)
SMS controle adds an extra security layer to your DigiD login. Most government services – including the Belastingdienst (tax authority) and Toeslagen (benefits) – require it.
How It Works
When you log in to a service that requires SMS controle:
- You enter your username and password (or use the app)
- DigiD sends a one-time code to your mobile phone via SMS
- You enter the code to complete the login
This is standard two-factor authentication. It means someone who steals your password still can’t access your account without your phone.
How to Enable It
- Log in to mijn.digid.nl with your DigiD credentials
- Go to “My DigiD” > “SMS controle”
- Enter your mobile phone number (Dutch or foreign number)
- DigiD sends a verification SMS to confirm the number
- Enter the code and confirm
Once enabled, SMS controle is used automatically whenever a service requires it.
Using a non-Dutch phone number? That’s fine. DigiD sends SMS to international numbers. Just make sure your phone can receive SMS in the Netherlands (check with your mobile provider if you’re using a foreign SIM).
DigiD from Abroad
If you live outside the Netherlands but need DigiD – for example, to file Dutch taxes or manage benefits – the process is slightly different.
How to Apply from Abroad
- Go to digid.nl/aanvragen and select “I live abroad.”
- Enter your BSN and your foreign address. You still need a BSN – if you’ve never had one, you’ll need to register through the RNI process first.
- Receive a service desk code. DigiD sends this via SMS or email. This is NOT your activation code – it’s a code to identify yourself at the next step.
- Activate within 30 days through one of these options:
- DigiD service desk visit: Take the service desk code to a DigiD service desk location in the Netherlands or at a Dutch embassy/consulate abroad
- Video call: Schedule a video call with NetherlandsWorldwide staff, who will verify your identity and activate your DigiD remotely
The video call option is available for people who can’t easily visit a DigiD service desk in person. You’ll need your passport or Dutch ID card for the video verification.

Common Problems and How to Fix Them
DigiD is straightforward when it works. When it doesn’t, here’s what’s usually going wrong.
Activation Code Expired
The activation code (starts with “A”) is valid for 21 days from the date the letter was sent – not from the date you received it. If you waited too long, the code won’t work.
Fix: Request a new activation code at digid.nl/aanvragen. You’ll go through the application process again and receive a new letter in 3-5 business days. Your username and password stay the same.
Activation Letter Not Arriving
If your letter hasn’t arrived within 5 business days, something may be wrong with your registered address.
Fix:
- Check that your postal code and house number at your municipality registration exactly match what you entered during the DigiD application
- If there’s a mismatch, update your address at the gemeente first, then request a new activation letter
- Check with your neighbours or building mailroom – sometimes letters end up in the wrong mailbox
- Request a new letter at digid.nl if needed
Phone Doesn’t Support NFC
You try the ID check but your phone can’t scan the document.
Fix: Check the minimum requirements:
- iPhone: iPhone 7 or newer (iPhone 6 and older don’t have the right NFC support)
- Android: Android 9.0 or newer with NFC hardware enabled
If your phone doesn’t meet these requirements, skip the ID check. You can still use DigiD for most services without it – basic DigiD plus SMS controle covers tax filing, benefits applications, and municipality services.
Lost Password
You’ve forgotten your DigiD password and can’t log in.
Fix: Go to digid.nl and click “Forgot password.” You’ll need:
- Your BSN
- Your postal code
DigiD sends a recovery letter to your registered address with instructions to set a new password. This takes another 3-5 business days.
Faster option: If you have the DigiD app installed and active on your phone, you can reset your password directly through the app without waiting for a letter.
SMS Not Arriving
You’re trying to log in with SMS controle but the verification SMS never comes.
Fix:
- Check that the phone number in your DigiD account is correct: log in at mijn.digid.nl and check “My DigiD” > “SMS controle”
- Check your phone’s signal and make sure SMS reception is working (try sending yourself a test SMS)
- If you’re using a foreign SIM, verify it can receive SMS in the Netherlands
- Wait a few minutes – sometimes SMS delivery is delayed during peak hours
- If the problem persists, remove the old number and add your phone number again in the SMS controle settings
DigiD App Won’t Connect
The app installation works but it won’t link to your DigiD account.
Fix:
- Make sure you’re entering the correct DigiD username and password
- Check that your phone meets the minimum OS requirements (iOS 15+ or Android 9.0+)
- Try uninstalling and reinstalling the app
- Make sure your phone has an active internet connection during the setup process
- If you recently changed your DigiD password, use the new password in the app
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to get DigiD?
The online application takes about 5 minutes. The activation letter arrives in 3-5 business days by post. Once you have the letter, activation is instant – enter the code and you’re done. Total time from application to active DigiD: about one week. Start the application as soon as you have your BSN number so you’re not waiting around when you need to file taxes or apply for benefits.
Can I use DigiD outside the Netherlands?
Yes. DigiD works anywhere you have an internet connection. You can log in to Dutch government services, file taxes, and manage your benefits from abroad using either the browser login or the DigiD app. If you’re using SMS controle, make sure your phone can receive SMS internationally (most modern plans include this, but check with your provider if you’re on a prepaid SIM).
Is DigiD free?
Completely free. There’s no fee to apply, no annual charge, and no cost for using any DigiD service. The activation letter, the app, the SMS controle – all free. If any website asks you to pay for DigiD, it’s a scam. The only official website is digid.nl.
What if my activation code doesn’t work?
Check three things: (1) the code starts with the letter “A” – if not, you may have the wrong letter; (2) the code hasn’t expired – you have 21 days from the date the letter was sent, not from when you received it; (3) you’re entering it correctly – the code is case-sensitive. If none of that helps, request a new activation code at digid.nl/aanvragen. Your username and password are preserved; only the activation code changes.
Do I need DigiD for everything in the Netherlands?
Not everything, but most government interactions require it. You need DigiD for: filing income tax, applying for healthcare allowance (zorgtoeslag), rent allowance (huurtoeslag), child benefits, and accessing most municipality online services. You do NOT need DigiD for: opening a bank account, signing a rental contract, visiting the doctor, or buying health insurance. As a rule: if it involves the government or public money, you’ll probably need DigiD.
What to Do Next
Now that your DigiD is set up, here’s what to tackle next:
- Enable SMS controle – if you haven’t already, turn on SMS two-factor authentication. Most government services require it. Takes 2 minutes.
- Apply for zorgtoeslag (healthcare allowance) – use your new DigiD to log into the Toeslagen portal and apply. Most single expats earning under EUR 40,857 qualify for a monthly healthcare allowance.
- Register at your municipality – if you haven’t done this yet, you need it before anything else. Your BSN and registered address are required for DigiD.
- Check the full moving to the Netherlands guide – see what else is on your arrival checklist and what to prioritise next.
